Abstract
A major problem in the design and extension of a meteorological observation station is the distribution of the measuring points. The problem is dealt by assuming that the region is divided into areas, for each sub-area a vertex is defined, which can correspond, for example, to a possible measuring point. The link between two vertices can be represented by a meteorological adjacency index. The solution is found by having each station represent each area or so that the geographical coverage of the zone is guaranteed, with differing degrees of reliability, by several stations. In both cases the optimization algorithms are made complex by the number of possible locations. In this paper, the different approaches are compared in case studies attributing varying costs, which also take into account the distance from the site chosen for the maintenance and/or automatic data collection centre.
