Abstract
This chapter considers some relevant leadership and management theories, models and ideas, and explains how these might be applied at three levels: intrapersonal, interpersonal and organizational or system. It explains the key concepts, theories and models of leadership and their application to healthcare professions education research. The differences between leadership and management and how to use both sets of skills appropriately are described. The chapter further talks about the principles of project management and one's own role as a research leader. It also explains how to develop and mentor healthcare education researchers, and build organizational research capacity. Much research focuses on leaders' qualities, behaviours and styles and, more recently on leaders' interaction with and influence on organizations, teams and systems. A prominent leadership theory, which has application to research leadership, is that of 'authentic leadership.
