Abstract
The decision to strengthen an existing structure vastly depends the building's seismic resistance to select an appropriate rehabilitation scheme, an accurate evaluation of the condition and seismic performance of the structure. In this chapter, the strength of existing building is evaluated for the given seismic zone; then adopting a practice to apply the earthquake load using Design Code (UBC-97), whether the building is safe enough to bear the earthquake load for the required zone '2B' was determined. The earthquake provisions considered in this study is primarily to safeguard against major structural failures and loss of life, not to limit damage or maintain function. After analyzing the building for lateral loads, all the columns were found to be inadequate to support the interaction of axial force and biaxial moment. Moreover, some of the beams were failed in shear. It was also observed that sway of the building and story drift was under control.
