Abstract
Feeder automation in smart grid is continuously developing and it strongly depends on communication in order to coordinate all remote intelligent electronic devices. According to technical requirements of power grids related to security, the real-time and the coverage. A public IP-based secure communication networks allowing the machines to automatically exchange the data is the most effective solution. The Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication as an application of the internet of the things (IoT) has the capacity to build a private environment of sharing data for smart grid equipment. This paper discusses the feeder automation communications requirements and suggests secure approaches for overcoming communication challenges using an encrypted end to end wireless communication and the DNP3 protocols for feeder automation in smart grid in order to increase the reliability of power system.
