Abstract
In this paper we investigate the characteristics of a novel penta-band antenna suitable for handset terminals. The structure combines shorted parasitic patches, capacitive loads and slots to achieve operation at 5 different frequencies, namely the GSM, DCS, PCS, UMTS, HIPERLAN=2 and IEEE 802.11a bands. We demonstrate that a 2.5:1 voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is realized, along with good efficiency, at all of these frequencies with a single antenna.
