Abstract

X-ray diffraction was used to determine the magnitude of residual stresses for an as-received Al/alpha Al2O3 composite material. A diffraction pattern of the loose crystalline powder is obtained, and a strong line in the back reflection region is carefully scanned to give the line profile. The magnitude of residual stresses is calculated from the line shift.
