Abstract
This paper presents the performance analysis of an ideal heat driven adsorption cooling cycle in both low and high operating pressures. A total of eight specimens of adsorbents and refrigerant pairs namely activated carbon fibre (ACF) of type A15/ethanol, A20/ethanol, Silica gel/water, Chemviron/R134a, Fluka/R134a, A20/R134a, Maxsorb II/R134a and Maxsorb III/R134a have been investigated. The relationships between equilibrium pressures, adsorbent temperatures and equilibrium adsorption concentrations (Duhring or P-T-W diagram) have been presented. The understanding of Duhring diagram (as shown below) is crucial in the design of commercial adsorption chillers. Parametric analysis has been carried out with various regeneration (desorption) and evaporating temperatures. Theoretical analysis shows that the ACF (A20)/ethanol can achieve 344 kJ/kg-adsorbent specific cooling effect (SCE) with regeneration temperature at 85 C. Moreover, the ACF (A20)/ethanol exhibits a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.7 and followed by the silica gel/water pair with COP of 0.68 at low regeneration temperature (below 85 degrees C).
