Abstract
The severity of power harmonics in today's power distribution networks remains a concerning topic for systems operators. To help address this concern, this work aims to investigate the severity of the Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) converters' harmonics in power distribution networks. The reported harmonic models of key power system components are analyzed from the distribution network point of view, and recommendations for realistic power harmonic flow analysis studies are highlighted. The main findings can be summarized as follows. Accurate data of the system components, particularly power loads, should be provided for reasonably accurate harmonic performance. The MVDC converter harmonic performance in the Albaha power system revealed that the total harmonic distortions (THD) at different voltage levels comply with the limits defined by the Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority (SERA). However, further investigation of individual harmonics at the point of connection (PoC) is required to evaluate their risk to sensitive loads and more future integrations of power electronics-based renewables systems.
