Abstract
In this paper, a novel double E-H shaped patch on a relatively thin substrate (about 0.01 lambda(0)) is proposed. The design adopts contemporary techniques; L-probe feeding, inverted patch structure with air-filled dielectric, and slotted patch. The composite effect of integrating these techniques and by introducing the novel patch, offer a low profile, broadband, high gain, and compact antenna element. Simulated results indicate that a 21.79% fractional impedance bandwidth is achieved with respect to the centre frequency of 2.065 GHz and the maximum achievable gain of 9.5 dBi. The proposed patch has a compact dimension of 0.544 lambda(0) x 0.275 lambda(0) (where lambda(0) is the guided wavelength of the centre operating frequency). The design is suitable for array applications with respect to a given frequency of 1.84-2.29 GHz.
