Abstract
Storage of food grain crops has always been a significant part of the post-harvest step in farming activities in rural life. Since prehistoric times, conventional storage techniques were being used more or less all over the world. Not much attention was paid on this issue like other agricultural problems. Previous studies have shown that considerable amount of food grains spoils after harvest due to insufficient storage and processing facilities. The purpose of the study was to assess food grain crops storage techniques used by progressive farmers in the province of Punjab, Pakistan. A survey questionnaire was used as an instrument for assessing the desired research problem. Factors like demographic profiles of the respondents, training and information sources, insect pest management during grain storage period and their knowledge level were used to assess the research idea. A systematic sample of 100 progressive farmers was taken for analysis purposes. The results showed that 76% of the respondents did not have any kinds of extension advisory services at all for the latest storage techniques. The results revealed that independent variables like age, experience, training/information and insect/pest management have excellent contribution in enhancing the knowledge level of the respondents in specific areas of food grain crops storage techniques implemented by the progressive farmers. The in-service training for extension field staff must be arranged to transfer advanced knowledge for food grain crops storage to the local farmers. Government should formulate transparent agricultural policy regarding food grain crops storage in the country.
