Abstract
Lips are important both functionally and cosmetically. Lip swellings may be acute or chronic, localized or diffuse and affect its function and look. Chronic causes are either granulomatous, orofacial granulomatosis (OFG), or non-granulomatous, Cheilitis glandularis. Evaluation of lip swelling should include medical and dental history as well as physical examination and microscopy. If biopsy reveals non-caseating granuloma, patient should also be evaluated for systemic disease. The initial diagnosis of OFG, which is characterized by a non-caseating granuloma in the absence of systemic disease, is usually non-specific because some of these later prove to be part of systemic disease like Crohn's disease and sarcoidosis. In addition, some local lip lesions are non-caseating granulomas, not described as OFG and not associated with the systemic disease, e.g. Leishmania macrocheilia.
