Abstract
In this paper the effect of varying the base width of a proposed low cost high efficiency solar cell structure is presented. The structure is considered to be low cost as it is etched through a highly doped, low quality and impure silicon wafer. This study is carried out for the structure when it doesn't respond to the ultraviolet part of the input solar radiation spectrum. Simulations for the non ultraviolet structure are carried out using advanced TCAD tools. The illuminated I - V C/C'S at different base widths is presented. For each base width, the open circuit voltage (V-oc), short circuit current density (J(sc)), fill factor (F.F) and conversion efficiency are calculated. In addition external quantum efficiency and spectral response at different base widths are presented. The optimum base width which enhances the non ultraviolet structure performance is selected.
