Abstract
A short survey of failure types and distribution of liquid ammonia tanks is presented. An attempt to define an optimal scope of failure investigation of a group of 50 tanks is also offered. Typical problems in manufacturing and service that can influence failure occurrence are outlined. Based on results obtained in this investigation is was concluded that the group of considered ammonia tanks is not fit for extended service. It was found that, depending on the problems in manufacture, some weldments could be considered as at a critical stage for service safety.
