Abstract
Diabetes apps are a trend that has been used to keep track of patient information. This trend started as health-oriented and now it wants to engage users more towards better health outcomes. Gamification has been introduced to make applications more engaging and challenging. The aim is to have more adherence and longer user commitment. In this paper, we analyze the top ten mHealth apps that are designed for diabetes patients using a Gamification framework called "Octalysis." We discovered that a majority of the apps focus on the intrinsic motivation "Empowerment" and " Social Influence", and the extrinsic motivation "ownership, and positively motivate patients with "Meaning." We recognize how the apps implement different Gamification components and based on the framework recommendations, we suggest a better design approach corresponding to intrinsic, extrinsic, positive, and negative motivation.
