Abstract
This paper discusses some of the opportunities and challenges of high-definition (HD) video processing in postproduction in the context of a research initiative to identify key technical problems arising from the new creative directions developing in the production of video content for large, high-resolution, flatscreen displays. First, issues related to the storage, bandwidth requirements, and transmission of HD video are briefly reviewed. Then, the application of advanced motion estimation and motion-compensating frame interpolation techniques for the creation of enhanced visual effects such as slow motion is presented.
