Abstract
This paper proposes Jaya algorithm for designing a coordinated structure composed of power system stabilizers (PSSs) and thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) based damping controller. In the design approach, a large and pre-specified set of operating conditions are taken into account. The coordinated design problem is treated as an optimization problem with an eigenvalue based objective function. The Jaya algorithm is used to find the optimal controller parameters. The performance of the multimachine power system is evaluated by applying the proposed Jaya based PSSs and TCSC controllers. The effectiveness and robustness of the coordinated design approach in improving the system's dynamic stability is demonstrated through the eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulation. From the results, it can be observed that the proposed Jaya based coordinated controller (JayaPSS&TCSC) provides superior damping to the low frequency oscillations on a wide range of operating points, compared to the uncoordinated designed stabilizers of the Jaya based PSS (JayaPSS) and Jaya based TCSC (JayaTCSC).
