Abstract
Inguinal herniorraphy is very common operation but no single herniorraphy has become universally accepted. Laparoscopic inguinal herniorraphy has become increasing popular among surgeons which has led to more controversy. The overall advantages of laparoscopic herniorraphy over conventional repair has not yet been sustained. Seventy five consecutive laparoscopic Bassini's for 70 patients with 75 inguinal hernia were performed over 2 years stated from June 1995 to May 1997, in King Khalid University Hospital (K.K.U.H.), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The procedure is done percutaneously by using modified needle in repair of hernia on the basis of Bassini's repair.
The average age of patient with indirect inguinal hernia's is 33 years and for direct inguinal hernia is 38 years. The procedure was performed to 68 males and 2 males. The average hospital stay is 1.1. day. Five patients previously underwent traditional open herniorraphy. Early complication include wound infection (two), Bladder injury (1). All patients were ambulating without significant pain after a mean 7.1 day. There was two cases of recurrence and operated by same technique. Four patients had intraabdominal testis where managed laparoscopic orchidectomy and two patients had varicocele underwent laparoscopic varicocolectomy.
In conclusions, laparoscopic Bassinin's repair is safe, less inexpensive has short operative time associated with low morbidity and low short term recurrence rate. Laparoscopic Bassini's repair, It seems to be more suitable compare to open methods and especially for recurrent bilateral hernias and associated intraabdominal pathology.
