Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a broad overview of issues related to long-term fiber reliability in telecommunication networks. An exhaustive review of this topic should include cable designs and reliability of the composite cable structure. However, such an undertaking is beyond the scope of this paper. References are included to cover fiber cables and specific fiber properties such as fiber strength and coating, and parameters relating to reliability and life-time predictions.
