Abstract
The introduction of the Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) link to the Albaha power network can increase the system's hosting capacity for more distributed renewable energy-based sources and meet future growing energy consumption without triggering stability and thermal issues. This paper is dedicated to the development of the detailed converter model, control system, and interleaved Sinusoidal Pulse-width Modulation (SPWM) scheme. When such an application is to be modelled to validate its concept of operation, the simple Proportional-Integral (PI) controller stands out as the most favourable option to be adopted. However, the tuning of the PI controller's parameters remains challenging for many researchers with the variety of classical control design approaches. Therefore, the simple Loop Shaping technique is implemented to design the control of the MVDC converter. The proposed converter is implemented in Simulink/MATLAB to validate the developed control system performance during transients and steady-state operation and investigate the harmonic performance with the proposed interleaved PWM over different operating conditions. The results imply the superior tracking performance of the control system and the effectiveness of the harmonic reduction method.
