Abstract
As the problem of power overloading in data centers attracts increasing concern, we need to control the operations of each server. This is vital for avoiding electrical surges and breakdown, which would cause the electrical breaker to trip and shut off the electricity in a data center. To achieve a practical solution, we must first control the power consumption of each individual server and then manage the power consumption of the data center as a whole. In this paper, we propose a power distribution manager for data centers (PDMDC), which allocates the power set points for each individual server in a data center. We tested of our PDMDC with rack-mounted IBM servers that demonstrate its applicability for power capping over multiple servers.
