Abstract
In. Pakistan, Software industry is progressing well at a steady pace. CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) is becoming a leading standard and organizations are beginning to realise that effective Project Planning (PP) is a pre-requisite for successful project management. PP is a key process area of CMMI at level 2 to provide a framework to enable project managers to make and revise estimates Of resources, costs and schedules. In this context, the current research surveys the IT industry in Pakistan and presents our findings. Our study shows that organizations appear to be good at determining life cycle models and development paradigms, establishing budgets and schedules, planning for resources and establishing project plans. However, the), (ire generally weaker in planning stakeholders' involvement, identifying risks, planning for data management activities as well as review and documentation. In this paper, we highlight the elements of good practice and discuss reasons for companies failing and limitations.
