Abstract
Inspection, one of the most important processes in manufacturing industries validates whether manufactured part lies within specified tolerance or not. It is critical to ensure high quality and non-defective products because poor quality might cause serious injury or even fatal accidents which are obviously not good for company's reputation. Automation of inspection activities can meet increased demands of accurate and precise inspection process. However, automated inspection tasks involve number of planning stages such as extraction of design information, probe selection and orientation, feature accessibility, part set up planning etc. Part set up planning is one of most critical steps for effective and efficient automation of CMM inspection. In this paper, two different methods have been introduced to determine part orientation on CMM machine table. The proposed methods have successfully been implemented and tested on prismatic part with many features. Moreover, results have shown that proposed approaches can achieve excellent performance compared to other methods.
