Abstract
This research investigates a new method to equalize the average state of charge in a modular multilevel converter with embedded energy storage batteries. The converter is used to drive a permanent magnet synchronous motor in an electric vehicle equipped with a single unit drivetrain. The motor is controlled to deliver the required mechanical torque during acceleration and to achieve regenerative braking during deceleration. The electric vehicle system is simulated to verify that the proposed control arrangement effectively fulfills the required dynamic performance, yet maintains an equal state of charge of the converter distributed batteries.
