Abstract
The paper presents an innovative risk assessment approach for a power transmission system incorporating dynamic thermal limit of the critical transmission lines with the presence of large PV (Photo Voltaic) systems. The entire processes in the approach were embedded into the Monte Carlo simulation. At first, the critical lines are identified by proposing a new loading severity index, reflecting the near overload and overload regions. Then, the dynamic thermal limits for the transmission lines are applied according to the IEEE 738 standard. The approach is validated using the IEEE 24-bus test system. The results suggest that utilizing dynamic thermal limits of the critical transmission lines with the presence of large PV systems potentially decrease the risk level, enhancing the security of supplying energy to customers.
