Abstract
Software project management is a complex activity, which requires systematic planning of activities and effective monitoring and control of procedures. In Pakistan, where software industry, is progressing at a steady pace and CMMI (Capability, Maturity, Model Integration) is emerging as a leading standard, the organizations are beginning to realise the importance of its core practices. In the current study, we explore the use of two of CMMI key practices of Project Planning (PP) and Project Monitoring and Control (PMC), in relation to IT industry in Pakistan and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. Our study shows that organizations appear to be good at determining life cycle models and development paradignis, planning for resources, establishing project plans, analysing issues and monitoring project parameters. However, they are generally weaker in identifying and managing risks, review of data management activities and documentation. In the paper, we also discuss reasons for companies' failing and limitations.
