Abstract
Negative impact of building construction on the environment can be minimized by the use of sustainable materials and by applications of Industrialized Building System (IBS). A study to identify the sustainable type of concrete floor slab in Malaysian construction practice was conducted. Data was collected through integrated matrix questionnaire survey from major construction players in Malaysia. Six types of concrete floor slab were compared, namely heavy weight concrete (in-situ), normal weight concrete (in-situ), composite concrete (in-situ), normal weight concrete (IBS-Precast), composite concrete (IBS-Precast) and light weight concrete (IBS-Precast). Normal weight concrete with IBS-Precast construction method was found to be the most sustainable one. The result of the study may help designers and consumers to make proper selection of the concrete floor slab material and construction type that meet the sustainable requirement.
