Abstract
Malaysia has gone through rapid industrialization since achieving its independence in 1957. The industrial development in Malaysia has given rise to the growth of the manufacturing sector, and was apparent in the 1980s with the initiation of the government's heavy industrialization. drive. In the 1990s, the implementation of public policies and government programmes were geared towards shifting the economy from labor intensive manufacturing to high technology with higher value added activities. The industrialization activities were thus transformed to technology-based, and as a consequence, the entrepreneurial activities that were carried out were technology focused. This study adopted a case study approach of the manufacturing sector to understand better the transformation from entrepreneurship to technology entrepreneurship. Specifically, this study looked into the automotive industry to examine the transformation of concentration in the particular state-led initiative. The World Bank framework was applied for examining the technology entrepreneurship practice of the automotive industry. The framework was adapted to the study, of which eight key dimensions were developed as the key activities of technology entrepreneurship that enable the achievement of competitive advantage for the particular sector.
