Abstract
A novel technique for realizing specified patterns radiated by antenna systems located on a given platform, such as mobile phone or shipboard topside environment is presented in this work. The proposed technique is based on the use of Characteristic Basis Functions (CBFs) that are extracted from the solutions for the current distributions generated by placing the user-specified antenna elements, e.g., a monopole or a PIFA at "allowable" locations on the antenna platform. Some examples illustrating the application of the CBF approach to antenna pattern synthesis in a systematic manner are presented in the paper and a comparison of the present technique with that based on the use of the Characteristic mode approach is included.
