The composition of 32 chromites from altered and metamorphosed Precambrian ophiolites has been determined by EPMA. The chromites generally display magnetite rims and cores of chromite: they have TiO (sub 2) < 0.30 wt.% and Fe (sub 2) O (sub 3) < 6.0 wt.%. Two main groups are identified: Cr-rich (Cr (sub 2) O (sub 3) 55-63 wt.%) and Al-rich (Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) 19-27 wt.%).
