Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the pregnancy outcome of the registered women to the unregistered women.
Methods: From January 2011 to December 2011, the oucome of the unregistered pregnant women who delivered at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia were compared the outcome of registered pregnant women.
Results: During the study period, there were 584 unregistered pregnant women who delivered at KAUH. Unregistered mothers were younger (28.51 +/- 6.73 vs. 29.53 +/- 6.23 years, p < 0.008). The number of vaginal delivery were more in unregistered mothers (p < 0.001). The unregistered mothers had more first, second, and third degree vaginal tears, while the booked mother more likely to have intact perineum and planed episiotomy. Apgar scores at 1 min and at 5 minute were better in registered mothers (p = 0.039 and 0.012 respectively). Unregistered mothers were more likely to have low birth weight babies (p < 0.0001).
Conclusions: Unregistered pregnant women were more at risk of adverse fetal hypoxia and low birth weight and more likely to have perineal tears than registered women.
