Abstract
The University of Petroleum and Minerals (UPM) is organised to support the
petroleum and mineral industries in the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia. UPM's
needs for library automation were: 1. Improved control over library
operations. 2. Improved control and management of the collection. 3.
Improved services to users. 4. Preventing duplication of effort. 5.
Providing new services. Describes in detail the first steps in the
direction of library automation in terms of: pre-planning and organization,
the evaluation phase, planning and development, implementation of
DOBIS/LIBIS at UPM.
