Abstract

Starting from an E. coli strain showing poor but detectable degradation of phenylacetate, mutants able to grow on furan and thiophene were selected. Further selections gave mutants able to degrade a wide range of benzenoid, oxygen or sulphur-containing heterocyclic compounds. These mutants may be useful in the desulphurization of coal.
