The title phenylhydrazine derivative, C16H16N2O4, has a crystallographically imposed centre of symmetry. Except for the methyl group, all non-H atoms are almost coplanar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0095 angstrom). Intramolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds are observed, generating S(6) graph-set ring motifs.
