Abstract
Treatment of a pregnant patient presents unusual challenges to the physician, who must take into consideration the vulnerable fetus even though there is little definitive information about the effects of drugs on the baby. Lithium shows teratogenic properties in some species. A moderate rise in the frequency of congenital malformations has been seen among children born of women given lithium during pregnancy. The current case report describes a patient who received lithium therapy during pregnancy. Her baby was born with major congenital heart disease, which was fatal. It is clear to us that clinicians should completely avoid lithium therapy during pregnancy.
