Abstract
Water Cycle Algorithm (WCA) is a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm. There is a lack of literature surrounding the use of WCA in modern cellular mobile networks. Another issue with modern networks is the importance of discretization of parameters in location management techniques. To deal with these issues, a Discrete WCA has been applied to the Reporting cell Planning (RCP) scheme for location management in Cellular Networks, with a view to optimize the Location management cost. The Location Management Cost is analyzed by taking various sizes for the cellular network for both reference as well as real network scenario, from the point of view of the reduction in the Cost per call arrival, and the number of iterations that are needed to achieve the optimum value. Comparisons are made by varying the population size within a said network size. Based on the simulation results, some salient trends are commented upon. The implementation renders an improvement of up to 23.34% in terms of absolute cost per call arrival, and an improvement up to 21.41% in terms of the iterations required to achieve minimum cost. This exhibits a promising insight into the wide scope of applicability of DWCA, and commands further works to optimize modern mobile networks.
