Abstract
This work presents a novel method to mitigate the occurrence of commutation failures in LCC-HVDC system connected to a weak AC system. A Fuzzy-PI controller and a STATCOM device are used in CIGRE HVDC benchmark system; The Fuzzy-PI controller is applied in both converters of the HVDC link and the STATCOM connected to the inverter side. The SimPower Systems and the fuzzy logic toolboxes of the MATLAB/SIMULINK software are used to perform the simulations. Dynamic performances during different faults on the inverter side were demonstrated by the simulation results. The proposed strategy has considerably reduced recovery time, transient oscillations and risks of commutation failure compared to the conventional system.
