Abstract
Current practice in education is to provide practical case studies to highlight and demonstrate the use of the theoretical knowledge imparted through formal lectures. We were fortunate at Sheffield City Polytechnic to have installed into our laboratories an industrial sewing machine of rather novel design. The company producing the machine were aware of the high noise levels created by its operation, and required guidelines which would assist them in reducing these levels.
This note describes a case study, given to second year engineering students, based on the techniques employed in analysing and reducing the noise output from the sewing machine.
