Abstract
Samples were analysed of Cretaceous black shales from near Aqualagna, north central Apennines, Italy (43 degrees 39'N, 12 degrees 43'E). The saturated hydrocarbon fraction of one sample, a dark grey shale of Upper Barremian age (115 m.y. B.P.), contains novel series of steranes, which have been identified as C (sub 26) -C (sub 28) 5beta (H)- and 5alpha (H)-A-nor-steranes. These steranes might be biological markers for certain types of sponges.
