A novel S compound, 1,4-bis(2',5',5',8a'-tetramethylhexahydrothiochroman)-butane is reported in immature S-rich sediments from the Miocene Monterey formation, California. This novel triterpenoid C skeleton has not been reported yet in sediments or organisms, and it may be biosynthesized through an enzymatic cyclization reaction of squalene (II) which shows similarities to the biosynthesis of beta ,beta -carotene (III) from lycopene (IV).
