Abstract
Different solvent extracts of Asphodilus tenifolius were evaluated for their yield, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents and HPLC analysis. Maximum yield (15.39%) was obtained with aqueous (80%) methanol. Antioxidant activity was determined through TLC-DPPH radical scavenging assay, spectrophotometric method of DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power determination and inhibition of peroxidation of linoleic acid system. From all the antioxidant activity determination assays, it was observed that aqueous ethanol extract exhibited maximum activity. Total phenolic contents ranged within 53.40-76.23 mg gallic acid equivalent/g of plant extract and total flavonoid contents in the range of 165.82-312.12 mg quercetin equivalent/g of plant extract. Antimicrobial activity was determined by disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination assays against four bacterial and three fungal strains. Results showed that maximum activity against all the microorganisms was manifested by aqueous ethanol extract of Asp hodilus tenifolius.
