Abstract
A series of 5-aryl-4-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)pyrazolidin-3-ones (4a-4g) were designed, synthesized, and characterized by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectral data analysis. Compounds 4a-4g were screened as antibacterial and antifungal agents against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, and fungal (Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus) strain by Disc diffusion method. Results revealed that all synthesized compounds revealed mild to good antibacterial as well as anti fungal activities when compared with the standard drugs. The compounds, 4-(1H-benzo[d]-imidazol-1-yl)-5-phenylpyrazolidi n-3-one (4a), 4-(1H-benzo[d] imidazol-1-yl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl) pyrazolidin-3-one (4f), and 4-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-pyrazolidin-3-one (4g) were showed significant antimicrobial activities. The most active compounds were found to be compounds (4f) and (4g) against bacteria as well as fungal strains respectively.
