Abstract
Results are presented from a study on the work hazards and safety in the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Industrial Estate (JIE). The industrial enterprises were classified according to industrial activity, and an environmental study in representative plants was conducted via walk-through surveys that evaluated hazards and controls, available health services, safe access, housekeeping, fire prevention, and worker safety in terms of machinery, electric power, pressure equipment, and materials handling. Data are presented on physical hazards, chemical hazards, engineering controls and worker protection, industrial safey, fire protection, occupational health and safety services, and sanitation and waste disposal. Recommendations are proposed to improve employee safety in the JIE, based on the study findings. The survey form, which was based on NIOSH surveys, is presented.
