Abstract

Water hyacinth plants were treated for one week with various concentrations of water soluble cadmium, manganese and zinc. The plants were then fed to phytophagous weevils which were evaluated for toxic effects induced by heavy metal exposure. Cadmium and manganese ions were found to interfere with protein synthesis, while zinc exposure had the opposite effect. These results suggest that the metals change the normal metabolism of proteins and nucleic acids.
