Reaction of ethyl
endo

-7-tosyloxy-9-oxobicyclo[4,2,1]nonane-1-carboxylates and of ethyl 9-oxobicyclo[4,2,1]non-7-ene-1-carboxylate with ethanolic sodium ethoxide leads by bridge fission to diethyl cyclooctene-1,4-dicarboxylate.
