Eight boys and 15 girls with chronic active hepatitis were monitored during 1980 to 1990 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to detect the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen.1 This article reports the clinical symptoms and results of laboratory investigations that included testing for serum bilirubin, transaminase and alkaline phosphatase levels, and prothrombin times, immunoglobulin electrophoresis, lupus erythematosus cells, and antismooth muscle antibodies.
