Abstract
This study aims at establishing the optimum mix composition of two types of Egyptian slags [water quenched ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and air-cooled slag (ACS)] and two types of calcium aluminate cements [cement 50 (CA50) and cement 80 (CA80)]. Different proportions (3, 6, 9, and 15 wt.%) from the two slag types were mixed separately to the two types of the high alumina cement. The mechanical, sintering and refractory properties of the pastes prepared from the mixtures were studied. It was found that the optimum composition is the mix containing about 10 wt.% of any of the slag types for both the calcium aluminate cements which gives good sintering, mechanical and refractory properties. Results envisage the possibility of preparing a refractory concrete from these optimum compositions that can be used either at high temperatures > 1500 deg C (CA80) or at limited firing temperatures < 1500 deg C (CA50).
