Abstract
The spectra of charge transfer complexes (CTC) of naphthalene (N), 1-naphthol (1-NL) and 2-naphthol (2-NL) with the pi-acceptors; TCNQ, CHL, BRL as well as with iodine display one broad charge transfer (CT) band. However, the spectra of CTC derived from TCNE and 2-NL/TCNQ exhibit two or three absorption bands due to CT transitions pi*<--a(u), pi*<--b(1u) and pi<--b(2g). The spectra are time and concentration dependent. The molecular quantities of the CTC are presented. The multiplicity of the CT bands are due to transitions from the HOMO's of the donor to the same LUMO of the acceptor. 1-NL/TCNE and 2-NL/TCNE systems form inner complexes in equilibrium with 1:1 CTC while N/BRL system forms 1:1 and 1:2 CTC. N acts as -donor with iodine while 1-NL and 2-NL act as n-donors.
