Abstract
One new sesquiterpene 1 together with ten known compounds 2-11 have been isolated from the soft coral Sinularia kavarattiensis collected from Mandapam coast of the Indian Ocean. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data, molecular modeling and by comparison with reported data in the literature. All the isolated compounds 1-11 have been screened for their antimicrobial activity (antibacterial and antifungal). Among them, compounds 1, 2, and 3 are found to have promising antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 18.75 mu g/mL for 1, 37.5 mu g/mL for 2) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (MIC = 18.75 mu g/mL for 3) respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibit good to moderate antifungal activity.
