Abstract
Adults collected in the Duars of the Himalayas of West Bengal (India) belong to five genera of the Harnischia complex. Four species, Cryptochironomus curryi Mason, C. ramus Mason, Demicryptochironomus vulneratus (Zetterstedt), and Harnischia curtilamellata (Malloch) are recorded for the first time from India, and four species, Cryptochironomus acuminatus, C. gracilis, Harnischia minuta and Paracladopelma diutinistyla are described as new. A key to the Indian species of Cryptochironomus Kieffer is presented. The female of Cryptochironomus subovatus Freeman, hitherto unknown, is described. One Japanese species, Demicryptochironomus chuzequartus Sasa, 1984 is proposed as a synonym of Demicryptochironomus vulneratus (Zetterstedt, 1838).
