Abstract
The deposition rates of lead, cadmium, copper and selected organic pollutants (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols) have been determined in the vicinity of the M6 motorway near Lancaster, and at background locations remote from the motorway. A major fraction of all motorway-derived pollutants measured is deposited within 15 m of the carriageway; metal deposition rates in the vicinity of the motorway approach background levels at distances of approximately 200 m from the carriageway. Samples of total deposition collected within 10 m of the carriageway had the highest concentrations of particulate-associated lead, the lowest dissolved lead concentrations and the highest pH.
